Head Coach Scott Stein is beginning his second year as the head coach of the Lancers.  Stein was at East in 2000-01 season as a varsity assistant to Lane Green.  Stein is entering his thirty-ninth year of coaching basketball and thirty-second as a head coach.  His career record at the varsity level is 425-279.  He has had six teams make it to the state tournament with the 1992 Abilene Cowboys winning a state title.  This list includes two seconds, a third, and a fourth place at the tournament.  Coach Stein and his wife, Christine, have four sons. They have eight grandchildren, five girls and three boys.  He welcomes the opportunity to continue the fine tradition of great basketball at East.  His traditional style of play is aggressive man-to-man defense and to push the ball offensively.  He believes this year’s team has the potential to compete for the league championship with 3 returning starters.  We hope to see you at some games!

Kelli Kurle will be serving her fifth year as the varsity assistant coach.  She has previously served on the volleyball, softball and soccer coaching staffs.  Kelli earned her B.A. in psychology from UMKC, a B.S. in secondary education and a M.A. in curriculum and teaching from the University of Kansas.  She currently teaches AP/IB Psychology here at SME. Kelli and her husband, Dustin, have an infant daughter, Charlotte.  They currently live with their burnese mountain dog, saint bernard and two black cats in Overland Park.

Julie Sparks returns for a second year as the Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach.  Coach Sparks graduated from SME in 1987 and has since coached basketball, volleyball, and softball at the Blue Valley and Sedalia school districts.  She has also coached at Hyde Park Bapist High School and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas.  She received her B.A. in Psychology and English Teaching Certification from William Jewell College. Julie and her husband, Jeff reside in Prairie Village.

Sue Chipman enters her twenty-sixth season as an assistant coach in girls’ basketball.  Chipman also serves as the varsity coach for both girls’ and boys’ tennis. This fall her girls’ squad won the state championship in 6A  This is her twenty-fifth year at East after teaching for nineteen years at Mission Valley (then Meadowbrook Junior High).  She also taught and coached for four years in Riverside, California.  Chipman received her undergraduate degree from Miami University in Ohio and her M.A. degree from Central Michigan University.  Coach Chipman has received the Kansas Tennis Coach of the Year, and has been named the Sun Country Coach of the Year in 2003, 2006, and 2008!  Sue and her husband Ken, have a daughter and son-in-law, Katie and Brian Hendrickson.  They have three granddaughters, Lauren (11), Sophie (10),  and Molly (7).  Sue and Ken enjoy golf, tennis, bicycling, and skiing.

Coach Shaban Scott Sr. is entering his third year as Freshman Girls’ Basketball Coach.  He is in his fifth year as an Industrial Technology Instructor at SME.  Coach Scott taught at Langston University and a middle school in Irving, Texas before coming to East.  Scott completed his undergraduate and masters degrees from Langston University, and his Educational Specialist from the University of Central Missouri.  Coach Scott has four sons, Aubrey, Carter, Savhon, and Junior.
